How Essential Oils Helped Me When I Hit Rock-Bottom

A few statistics on the current state of drug addiction in the united states:

In the US alone, an estimated 54 million people over the age of 12 have used prescription drugs for nonmedical reasons in their lifetime. 1

100 people die every day from drug overdoses. This rate has tripled in the past 20 years.

Drug overdoses killed about 72,000 Americans last year, a record number that reflects a rise of around 10 percent, according to new preliminary estimates from the Centers for Disease Control. The death toll is higher than the peak yearly death totals from H.I.V., car crashes or gun deaths.

If you take a look at my websites "about me" page you will read about my experience of hitting rockbottom after alcohol and pharmaceutical drugs brought me to my knees at 23 years old.

Part of my story that is not on that page is the time when I first realized that I needed to find something to help me calm my nerves in early sobriety when faced with situations that caused me anxiety (pretty much at that time, it was being around human beings for a while;) and living in a world where my social lubricant was no longer an option.

I took my sobriety very seriously because my life was getting so much better and I was petrified to go back to the place that brought me so far down.

But if you have had an addiction or know someone who has, adjusting back into "real life" after treatment can be a really precarious time.

Before I introduce how oils came in, I need to say that the foundation of my recovery came from a network of sober friends and supports, a program of action and honesty - my toolbox before using essential oils was well-rounded. In no way, should this post be misconstrued to mean that the oils were the only thing that helped.

The one thing it lacked, was a momentary fix for those times when calling a friend or going to a meeting wasn't possible.  My old solution of popping a xanax no longer existed.

That's when I found the oils.  Lemongrass was my first.  It was hidden in the back of a healthfood store in the town I lived.  It was the thing I reached for at work when I felt overwhelmed, it was there in those moments I needed to ride out the anxiety but couldn't leave the situation I was in immediately.

It soothed both my physical and emotional nerves and helped me ride out the waves of angst needed so I could get to the other side without picking up a drink or drug.

So my story started there.

But it has been built upon as both of my parents are also cancer survivors.

So I am very aware of what I put in, on and around my body.

I want the products I use to leave the smallest synthetic footprint possible - there are enough toxins in the air and environment that I try not to add any more than I have to.

So oils, became part of my wellness routine beyond just soothing my anxiety.

They have become part of my low-tox cleaning products, they have been the first aid tools I use like grabbing a drop of helycrhism to stop the bleeding when I cut myself from shaving, or when my headache starts to pound and I roll peppermint around the base of my skull and temples.

They have been the painkiller that anesthetized the seering feeling that resulted in my big toe when I got a brutal in-grown toenail (lovely, I know;) and dropped clove right onto it.

They have become so much more than I had ever imagined they would and it happened organically, step by step, starting simply, with a bottle of lemongrass and the first drop.

Today I want to share these oils with others because they provide so many solutions to problems we experience on a daily basis.  They also have become the arsenal that is part of a comprehensive wellness routine designed to keep me on my feet and able to share by doing work I love.

So, whether you are not quite a believer yet or you feel you just don't have time - let me ask you this... if you knew that these oils could truly change your life... would you be wiling to give them a try?
